Welcome to Wheaton Dental Sleep Center

Do you find that even after a long night’s sleep, you wake up and still feel tired? Do you sometimes wake up gasping in the middle of the night? Is your partner threatening to throw you out of bed because of your snoring?
These are all symptoms of sleep apnea, and while your dentist might not be the first person you think about who can help with a problem like this, they are often exactly who you need. In fact, at Wheaton Dental Sleep Center, we have helped many of our patients finally get a good night’s sleep.

Why Can a Dentist Treat Sleep Apnea?

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and this is the type that a dentist can help to treat. With OSA, the muscles in the back of your throat relax and partially block your airway. This causes your blood oxygen levels to drop, and when your brain senses that drop, it rouses you from sleep. Often you don’t even remember waking up.

OSA can frequently be treated with oral appliances that reposition your jaw and hold your tongue out of the way so that you can breathe without obstruction. Your dentist can help determine which oral appliances are best for you. Here’s how we can help you:

01

Consultation

Your great night’s sleep begins with a consultation at Wheaton Dental Sleep Center. We’ll ask you to complete a questionnaire and information regarding your medical history so we can get a good idea of what could be disturbing your sleep. Based on your consultation, we may proceed to the second step.

02

At-Home Test

If we determine you might be experiencing something like sleep apnea, the next step is to refer you to one of our highly recommended sleep physicians to conduct an at-home sleep test. This involves using a device to record information about your breathing, snoring, blood oxygen levels, and sleep apnea events.

Following your at-home sleep test, the doctor will schedule an appointment to discuss the results with you and go over the best treatment options.

03

Treatment

If it is determined that you do have obstructive sleep apnea, your physician will develop a treatment plan that is custom tailored for you, beginning with the least invasive options. These begin with some lifestyle changes to your diet and exercise regimen and may include using a dental appliance. There are many treatment modalities available that alleviate OSA for our patients. In some cases, a CPAP machine may be recommended to ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

Why is Treating Sleep Apnea Important?

Sleep apnea is not just a bothersome interference of your sleep patterns. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is linked to some very serious health problems including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. That’s why it’s important to treat this condition. It’s also important for your mental health and well-being and the health of your close relationships.

Snoring is Affecting My Relationship

Sleep apnea can cause excessive snoring because of the airway obstruction it causes. It can get so bad, that neither you nor your partner can sleep well.

I Wake Up Tired After a Full Night’s Sleep

That’s a common complaint of people who suffer from sleep apnea. They sleep for eight hours, but somehow, they’re still tired when they wake up.

I Need an Alternative to CPAP

If you know you’ve got sleep apnea, but you’re delaying getting treatment because you don’t want a CPAP machine, there’s good news.
